Kochi: Students who netted higher ranks and secured admission in Government engineering colleges are an upset now as they have been denied entry to better Government engineering colleges through spot admissions.
The same is the case with others who secured admission in Government merit seats. This is because the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations has now stipulated that students won’t get the same branch to which they are admitted through the allotment process in one college, in the spot admission in another college. The students say this is gross injustice. This is intended to favour some others, they say.
“How can they deny me the opportunity for admission to a better college near my home? This is gross injustice because when there is a vacancy, I can be the natural claimant to it having secured a high rank,” said Abhishek, a student who was admitted to a second grade Government engineering college.
However, the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations, B.S.Mavoji said this had been stipulated as per a State Government order in 2013.
“Otherwise the admission process will never end. Spot admission is an opportunity for those who failed to secure admission and not for those who had already been admitted. It is not an alternative to the allotment process. Earlier, students who were admitted to one engineering college were not allowed to participate in spot admissions at all. But now the State Government has allowed them to pick another branch which they did not get in the allotment process,” Mavoji said.
The CEE said that so many vacancies had come up during the spot admission this time as the admission process in the State had been completed ahead of the NIT and IIT admissions.
“Those who got admission in NITs and IITs dropped out which created so many vacancies for spot admission,” he said.
