CHENNAI: With frequent fire accidents occurring in and around T. Nagar, residents of the locality say that they no more feel the place is safe for them. They say that the local bodies still need to turn vigilant on violations in fire safety norms in commercial complexes.

“The pitiful state of T. Nagar is revealed when an ambulance had to cross through the congested main roads. Be it hawkers who eat at the roadside or the high-rise commercial buildings, the norms are flouted,” says Mr E. Sridharan, a member of the T. Nagar residents welfare association.

The residents recently took out a rally on vehicles as a mark of protest to clear encroachments on the service lane of Usman road flyover. Ms Sindhu Radha, a resident of CIT colony, says that pedestrians suffer the most while walking along the roads congested with hawkers.

“We are pushed to the middle of the road as the roadsides are encroached. Pedestrians face the risk of being hit by speeding two-wheelers on the narrow stretches,” she says.

Mr S. Sowmithran, a resident of Nathamuni street, says that he has abandoned the practice of visiting malls for shopping due to the risk of fire accidents.
