Chennai: Headmistress Shashi Singh of the Jaigopal Garodia government girls school in Virugambakkam and headmaster S. Audiyappan of Motilal Fomra higher secondary school in the city have bagged the President’s award for ‘Best Teacher 2014’. They would receive the award from the President, Pranab Mukherjee, on Teachers’ day (September 5). Both of them have won the hearts of their students after enabling them to score 100 per cent results in their respective subjects for many years.
Ms Shashi Singh, who was a bank officer, chose to become a teacher so as to balance her family life and profession. Speaking to DC, Ms Singh said, “I became a teacher by choice in 1995. But I have enjoyed my journey as a teacher all these years. I am proud to say that I was able to equip children to score 100 per cent pass in English for the past 18 years without a break. I ensured that every student is able to cope with the lessons I teach,” she said.
Sharing the secret of her teaching method, she said, “When a teacher shows unconditional love towards students, all of them would be interested to listen to the teacher and they would be drawn to the subject.” Ms Singh, wife of senior IAS officer Swaran Singh, studied in Punjabi medium in a government school and continued her postgraduate studies in Tamil Nadu.
Another awardee, Mr Audiyappan, biology teacher and headmaster, is a well-known figure in Sowcarpet. He joined MFHSS in 1980 and still works in the same school.
“In all these 35 years, none of my students has failed in biology. Twenty of my students have become doctors and 300 of them are engineers now. I believe that my school is my home and students are my children and part of my family,” he said. Giving special attention to slow learners and motivating them to clear the exams without fear is his hallmark.
