Andhra Pradesh ready to fund banks for waiver

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government is making efforts to fund banks to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore for farm loan waiver. AP agriculture minister P. Pulla Rao said the state is ready to pay Rs 25,000 crore to the banks, if they come up with a list of farmers genuinely in need of a waiver. Speaking to media in the Assembly lobbies on Saturday he said that after linking the farmers’ bank accounts with Aadhaar cards, real beneficiaries’ list will be prepared.
AP chief secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao will speak to the RBI Governor in a meeting with the top bureaucrats of all states, on Monday, at Mumbai. Mr Krishna Rao will separately discuss the rescheduling of crop loans with the RBI Governor then. The RBI had announced rescheduling of loans in 120 mandals of four districts of Andhra Pradesh, but the government wants it in 572 mandals.
According to a senior official, the government plans to request the RBI to do an audit of all the transactions of banks in the state. The state government feels that there are many irregularities in the distribution of farm loans and it is making every effort to ensure families in genuine need can avail the Rs 1.5 lakh waiver. One official said that the state government wants to close the waiver of farm loans issue by October 2.
