Chennai: Apparently fearing that the BJP-AIADMK axis would steal the show on his favourite Sri Lankan Tamils issue during this round, DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday announced an “emergency meeting” of the Teso.
Karunanidhi invited all Teso member parties to attend Tuesday’s meeting at the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam, barely a few days after a six-member TNA (Tamil national alliance) delegation met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to push for a political solution and get justice to the Tamils in the island nation.
The delegation is also expected to meet Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa soon. Obviously, sensing their move, Karunanidhi on Monday announced an emergency meeting of the Teso. Ever since the hunger strike he observed between breakfast and lunch during the fag end of the Eelam war, Karunanidhi’s DMK has been at the receiving end on the Lankan Tamils issue.
Initially, Karunanidhi even had difficulty in retaining the name Eelam in the revived Teso, which had to mellow down its rhetoric during the tenue of UPA-II so as not to antagonise Sonia’s Congress, which turned its back at the DMK as soon as it won 206 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha election.
