New Delhi: The saffron camp, and specially the government, on Wednesday launched a counter-attack over a covert move to tarnish the image of home minister Rajnath Singh and his son Pankaj. For the past few weeks, a rumour was circulating in Delhi’s political circles that Pankaj Singh, the home minister’s son, had been ticked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for unsavory political conduct.
The needle of suspicion was pointing at two BJP leaders, including a woman leader. The clandestine attempts to tarnish the home minister’s image also indicated that there was simmering internal strife at the top in the BJP.
While an angry and emotional home minister declared on Wednesday that “rumours against my family members are baseless” and vowed that he would “quit politics if there is an iota of proof against me or my family members integrity.” The PMO also denied reports.
Earlier, eyebrows had been raised as the BJP had cold-shouldered the home minister’s son for the byelections in Uttar Pradesh while senior leader Lalji Tandon effectively managed to get a ticket for his son Gopalji Tandon. As rumours kept circulating an emotionally charged Singh made his stand public.
