Heavyweights gear up for local body polls

BJP is planning to give a good fight to the ruling AIADMK in Coimbatore corporation polls

Chennai: Local heavyweights of Dravidian majors have begun  work for the local body elections as they see the ensuing elections as a run up to the 2016 assembly polls. 
 
In Chennai, two wards of the corporation, one in Tondiarpet zone and another in Alandur zone will face bypoll next month. And in Kancheepuram district seven municipal wards attached to Pallavaram, Tambaram and Chengalpet municipalities are going to polls. For Chennai and Kancheepuram a total 67 local body posts are waiting to be elected.
 
This time with  BJP national secretary H. Raja making it clear that the national party is keen on contesting the Coimbatore corporation polls, where the party gave a good fight to the ruling AIADMK and lost finishing second overtaking the DMK in the Lok Sabha elections. 
 
When DC spoke to mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy about two vacant wards in the corporation and the bypoll, he said, “We are ready for polls and the public are ready to vote for AIADMK across the state. Our party will retain both the wards in Chennai.” 
 
“There is vancancy in two wards in Tambaram municipality and we will win the wards hands down due to Amma schemes,” says Star Prabha, an AIADMK functionary in Tambaram.
 
“We are waiting for the final orders from the party high command. In a day or two, the party seniors will announce the DMK’s stand on local body polls. However party functionaries have begun the fieldwork at wards facing byelection,” a DMK senior said.
