Coimbatore:With the sudden shifting of the Coimbatore corporation commissioner G.Latha ahead of the mayoral polls in Coimbatore,  new commissioner S. Ganesh took charge on Thursday, even as the  state election commission announced that the elections would be held September 18.

Ganesh, a Group 1 officer of the 2002 batch from Namakkal, is the 22nd commissioner of the Coimbatore corporation. “People can meet me any time and I will be glad to make efforts to resolve their grievances,” he told the media, soon after taking charge.

Ganesh’s last assignment was as the joint managing director of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. Earlier, he had also served as the district revenue officer of Dharmapuri and Erode.

The new commissioner said that the implementation of the infrastructural projects  announced by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to the tune of Rs 2,378 crore would be his top priority. The Chief Minister had announced 2,912 houses for the homeless poor at a cost of Rs 443.55 crore, underground drainage and stormwater drains in extended areas of the city corporation at an estimated cost of Rs 1,555 crore and a Rs 125 crore new integrated bus terminus.

Talking to the media after taking charge, the commissioner said that the Pilloor and Siruvani, the main sources of drinking water in the city, are overflowing. “So, I do not anticipate any water problem.”

However, he said that his experience as a key officer of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board would come in handy to ensure effective supply of water. “With experience in water supply and distribution, I shall make sure that water issues are handled effectively. Further, the solid waste management scheme will be pursued scientifically without causing any harm to the environment and without compromising on sanitation and hygiene,” he said.

Desilting eight tanks which are rich water sources in the city would also be given significant priority. As for health, 12 health centres at a cost of '7.04 crore, development of 20 health centres and setting up of a new centre will  be taken up, he added.
