It’s a common practice among several K’town actors: once they establish themselves, they diverge into producing movies. Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Dhanush, Santhanam, Arya, Vishal, and more recently, Suriya, have all started their own banners. Very few, like Prakash Raj and Cheran, also went into the business of marketing their audios. At a time when the audio market is at an all-time low, with hardly any ‘physical sales’ of audio CDs, actor Vishal surprised everyone on his birthday by launching his music label, V Music. Sources say that audio CDs of even big films are not selling well because people either download the songs or listen to them on radio stations.

Some music labels have stopped manufacturing audio CDs. But Vishal says that he wants to break the myth that there is no market for film music. What then prompted Vishal to go down the untrodden path? “I started my own production banner, Vishal Film Factory, out of anger; likewise, I have also started V Music. My past bad experiences with some of my earlier releases made me a producer. Similarly, the unpleasant incidents I faced while selling the music of my past two production ventures was an eye opener. I was hardly getting any money through audio sales and was wondering what really was happening.

I want to expose the actual situation. Good or bad, I thought, let me experience it myself. I am happy that I have the freedom to do what I want to do.” His sister Aishwarya will manage V Music and his first album, released through V Music, will be Poojai. Vishal says that it’s not only his own films, but he was ready to buy the audio rights of other actors’ films and market them. “As an actor, I can simply mind my own business. But  my dad always says, ‘don’t preach only in films, practice in real life too’, and I follow this.

I know nothing except films. Whoever wants to take advantage of the industry, be it through piracy or other methods, I will stand up against it, and not for publicity. Piracy has become an alternative business, eating away into our industry. I beg the entire industry to come together and raise their voice in unison to curb the biggest threat to it: piracy.”
