Huge fertile land disqualifies Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangaligiri
Krishna, Guntur & West Godavari districts has some of the most fertile agricultural land
Hyderabad: The Sivaramakrishnan Committee has its ‘terms of reference’ to defend its suggestions for Andhra Pradesh capital. While the ‘terms of reference’ given to the Committee said ‘least possible dislocation to existing agriculture systems, the Committee found that the Krishna, Guntur and West Godavari districts comprise some of the most fertile agricultural lands in the country, contributing more than one per cent to the national rice production.
Suggesting that the government revisit its capital plans on the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangaligiri urban development, which is almost twice the size of the state of Goa, the Committee observed: “VGTM area with its ring road seeks to bring more land under urbanisation.”
“Around 65 per cent people in Guntur and 5 per cent in Krishna are dependent on agriculture. Any attempt to convert these lands will seriously displace this population,” the report says.
