286 in Tamil Nadu screened for Ebola

These passengers will be monitored for 30 days for any symptoms for the virus

Chennai: A total of 286 passengers, who arrived at the four airports of Chennai, Tiruchy, Coimbatore and Madurai, from the  ebola virus-affected countries until September 1, have been kept under observation, while 19 more who arrived, but travelled to the neighbouring states, were monitored by that state’s health department, according to Dr K. Kulandaisamy, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
 
He said, “As many as 265 persons from Liberia, 15 from Nigeria, 5 from Guinea and one from Sierra Leone, arrived at various airports of Tamil Nadu since the first week of August. The medical team at the airports conduct a check-up and issue a slip with the contact numbers to use during an emergency. Their contact numbers and address were also collected from the passengers.”
 
These passengers will be monitored for 30 days for any symptoms for the virus through regular door checks by Health Department staff. No passenger showed symptoms of ebola. The first suspect, a 26-year-old man from Theni, who arrived in Chennai from the Republic of Guinea in West Africa via Dubai on August 9, was totally out of danger.
