Mysore: With hardly a few weeks left for the Mysore Dasara, preparations for the 10- day extravaganza have picked up pace with the appointment of political members to all 20 sub- committees. The official committee members were appointed on August 12. While two official members have been appointed executive president and secretary,  the three new members on each committee have been appointed president and vice presidents by district in- charge minister and Dasara Executive Committee chairman,  V. Srinivasprasad.

To  avoid misuse of funds, e-tenders have been invited this year , according to deputy commissioner, Shikha. While Rs 12 crore has been allocated for the Mysore Dasara this year, Rs 1 crore each has been allocated to Mandya and Charamajnagar for their Dasara celebrations.

At a meeting in the DC’s office on Monday it was decided to honour guests with either medicinal saplings , books or a painting instead of garlands as part of the “greening” of the Dasara celebrations.
As many as 30,000 saplings of  50 varieties of medicinal plants will be planted in the district and some  distributed to women at the Women’s Dasara, and to farmers to encourage them to grow them.  A quiz  will be organized on medical plants for children during the Dasara, according to sources.

As part of the green initiative,  Mysore Zoo, Karanji Lake nature park and Chamundi Hills have  already been declared plastic- free zones, and more tourist destinations will be added to the list, says zoo executive director,  B. P. Ravi.
