Mangalore: Modi ji said, open a bank account, they all did. Modi ji promised debit cards, they got RuPay cards. Modi ji promised Rs 1 lakh insurance, they got that, too. Now, they are asking, where’s the Rs5,000 he promised? Call it the burden of rising expectations or just an old habit that won’t die, many people believe that PM Narendra Modi promised everyone a Rs 5,000 ‘incentive’ for opening bank accounts under his Jan-Dhan Yojana.
Vasanthi of Mittabagilu village, near Mangalore, said excitedly, “It seems Modi ji will credit Rs 5,000 into our accounts. Even if we spend Rs 1,000 to open the account, we still get Rs4,000”. Cab driver Monu fell for it, too, and was disappointed when he checked with his bank.
Even in Mangalore city, “Few days ago, a customer said he had opened a Jan-Dhan account and asked when we would credit the Rs 5,000 that Mr Modi promised”, said a senior banker. “We had to explain to him that it was only an OD facility”.
