CBI refuses to file chargesheet, 3 men accused of killing Badaun sisters get bail

Initial inquiries had suggested that the sisters were raped

New Delhi: The main accused in the alleged rape and murder of two cousins here was granted conditional bail by a local court on Thursday.

Additional District Judge Anil Kumar granted conditional bail to Pappu Yadav and his two brothers - Avdhesh Yadav and Urvesh Yadav - arrested along with two constables, who were granted bail three days ago.

According to Pappu Yadav's counsel, Jawahar Singh Yadav the bail of the three persons has been accepted on personal bonds of two lakhs each as well as sureties of the similar amount.

The counsel said that the documents relating to the bail would be produced in the court tomorrow and they would be released after their verification.

They would also have to give an undertaking that in case of any evidence was found against them in future, they would present themselves in the court and would neither try to contact nor influence any witness or investigative agency.

According to prosecution, filing of charge sheet within 90 days in such cases is mandatory. As CBI, which is investigating the case, has not filed the charge sheet during this period nor sought additional time for investigation, the accused have been able to secure bail.

Two constables arrested along with these three have been granted bail on September 1 on the same grounds. The bodies of the two cousins, aged 14 and 15, were found hanging from a tree in Katra-Saadatganj village here in the last week of May, an incident which sparked national outrage with the Samajwadi Party government in the state coming under fire on the issue of law and order.
