Chennai: Over 13,000 contract workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) have begun their indefinite fast from Wednesday night demanding regularisation of all the contract workers as per the Supreme Court order.

The strike call was given by the Joint Action Council (JAC) of trade unions following the failure of talks with NLC management happened in the presence of assistant commissioner of labour P. Sivarajan  on Wednesday. The unions had served a strike notice on August 18, stating demands of equal pay for equal wages, among others.

In a statement here, Labour Progressive Front general secretary M. Shanmugham said that the management has given a seniority list to the apex court as per its order and enrolled around 4,500 contract workers in the Industrial Co-Operative Service Society.

Even though there were over 2,000 posts remaining vacant, the management is insisting on regularising only 250 workers, he said, demanding regularisation of all the contract workers.
