BJP mayor candidates may announce today

The saffron party has nominated nine candidates for various wards in the corporations

Chennai: The BJP has announced its first list of candidates for the September 18 local body byelections on Wednesday night fielding candidates for almost all the ward members’ posts. The party, which has decided to contest from all the three corporations, will announce its mayoral candidates on Thursday, last date for filing of nomination papers.
 
All the candidates will simultaneously file their papers on Thursday for the civic polls scheduled for the posts of mayor of Coimbatore, Thoothukudi, and Tirunelveli corporations, besides municipal chairpersons and councillors in several other local bodies. 
 
The saffron party has nominated nine candidates for various wards in the corporations, in addition to candidates who have been fielded for 26 wards in municipalities, six town panchayat presidents’ posts, 31 town panchayat wards, six district panchayat councils, five panchayat union wards, 21 panchayat union councils and four village panchayat members.
 
“We will announce the names of our mayoral candidates on Thursday,” said  a senior leader said. Close on the heels of MDMK, the New Justice Party founder A.C. Shanmugam has pledged its support to the BJP. The DMDK on Wednesday extended its support for the saffron party and its founder Vijayakanth appealed to his party men to strive for BJP’s win in civic polls.
