Chennai: The Congress is the latest in the long list of opposition parties in Tamil Nadu to abstain from the civic bypolls to be held on September 18.

Announcing the decision at party headquarters Satyamurthy Bhavan on Wednesday, TNCC chief B.S. Gnanadesikan justified the decision saying everyone was aware of  the manner in which the assembly and civic bypolls are conducted in the state.

“The situation is not conducive to opposition parties facing bypolls and hence the Congress has decided not to contest in the civic bypolls,” Gnanadesikan said.
