Chennai :AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who was the first to announce her party candidates for the September 18 local body elections, will start campaign from September 12 for the candidates.
She is expected to address public meetings and campaign for her party candidates at various places in the state. Ms Jayalalithaa will campaign in the coastal districts of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli besides Coimbatore on September 12, 14 and 15 respectively, according to a release from the party here on Thursday.
The civic polls are being held for the posts of Mayor in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore and for the posts of municipal chairpersons in eight municipalities including Arakkonam, Kodaikanal, Coonoor and Pudukottai in addition to the posts of councillors in various local bodies. The filing of nominations had commenced on August 28 and it concluded on Thursday. The results will be declared on September 22.
Apart from the ruling AIADMK, the BJP supported by its allies, the DMDK, MDMK, NJP, PMK and KMDK and the Left parties are in the poll fray. AIADMK’s arch rival the DMK, its ally VCK and the Congress have boycotted the civic byelections.
Ms Jayalalithaa had piloted her party to a resounding victory in the LS polls elections winning 37 out of 39 seats. The party is set for another impressive electoral show this time too.
