Tirupati: Spiritual fervour marked the three-day annual ‘Pavitrotsavams’ festival which began on a traditional note at the ancient Lord Govindaraja Swamy temple in Tirupati on Friday.
The festivities at the temple began with ‘Pavitra Prathishta’ ritual at the Yagashala amidst the chanting of the Vedic hymns by the temple priests. Later the celestial ‘Snapana Tirumanjanam’ was performed to the processional deities of Lord Govindaraja Swamy and his consorts. Later in the evening the deities were taken out in a grand procession along the four Mada streets encircling the Govindaraja Swamy temple.
According to the Agama Shastras, Pavitrotsavams are held each passing year to restore the sanctity of the temple by washing away the sins committed all year long by the visiting devotees as well as the temple staff through Aalaya Sudhi and Punyahavachanam.
Senior officials of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and scores of devotees took part in the festivities at the temple on Friday.
