New Delhi: The All India Tennis Association, which initially termed Somdev Devvarman’s decision to skip the Asian Games as incorrect, on Friday came out in support of the country’s top tennis singles player’s move.Somdev opted out of the quadrennial event to concentrate on his ATP tour tournaments to improve his rankings.

Said Aita president Anil Khanna, “I completely supports Somdev’s decision. Playing for country is important and he is doing so with his Davis Cup appearance. But to be in top-100 in the world is also very significant as it gives a player a direct entry to the Grand Slam.

“Rankings plays a vital role in a tennis player’s life and Som is no different. Playing even a round or two in a Major gives a player a boost in their rankings as well as make them financially sound. It is very important for Som’s professional career,” he added.

Khanna though denied talks of Rohan Bopanna’s pull out from the Asiad as of now but said “anybody can withdraw his name anytime from the squad”.
