Hyderabad: After fervour, a shabby goodbye to Ganesha
Many Ganesha idols lay on footpaths along NTR Marg even as devotees milled around
Hyderabad: Thousands of people who will turn up at the Hussainsagar on Monday to immerse Ganesh idols may find an unedifying sight. Idols that have been immersed in the lake are retrieved and dumped on the footpaths and the foreshores of Hussainsagar. Some of the idols, which were worshipped with great fervour, have splintered.
On Sunday, many idols lay on the footpaths along NTR Marg even as devotees milled around and idols were being immersed amid much fervent chanting. “Of course, we are for eco-friendly measures, but this is definitely not the way to retrieve idols,” said A.G. Rao, a private banker and resident of Suchitra Circle. “The workers are just dumping the broken parts of Ganesh idols in public view. The HMDA can at least cover the idols with tarpaulin.”
This is not an isolated reaction. “Why don’t they keep vehicles ready and take away all the retrieved idols immediately?” said M.R. Gupta, who owns a factory and is a resident of Jubilee Hills.
