Karimnagar: Coal production at the two ppencast mining projects (OCPs) has come to a standstill due to incessant rains in Ramagundam since Saturday midnight. Around 40,000 tonnes of coal was not excavated from OCP-I and II after the machinery was submerged in the floodwaters.

The Singareni Collieries Companies Limited (SCCL) operates many OCPs in Ramagundam region. However, from Saturday night, there was significantly lower production from OCP-I, II and III. The loss of coal production was put at 40,000 tonne at the three OCPs together.

Apart from the machinery used to excavate coal, electric motors, used for lifting water from the quarries in the OCPs, too were submerged. On information, the SCCL authorities have initiated steps to remove the machinery and motors from the quarries.

Meanwhile, overburden removal (OBR) works at these OCPs were also halted due to rains. The OBR works are carried out to explore coal fields in an OCP. Consequently, the SCCL is unable to achieve its daily target production.

It may be recalled that the SCCL witnessed a loss of 2, 22,018 tonne due to incessant rains in the month of July.
