Kochi: A team of the crime branch police in Ernakualm is on the verge of cracking a case connected with the headless body of a person found burning in Arakunnam near Piravom in the district eight years ago. The team probing the case has gathered some crucial information indicating that the body is that of a convicted person undergoing life imprisonment in Kannur central jail.
The person, who came out on parole, had failed to return to the prison and the investigation connected with that had led to the crime branch team to link with the burning incident. The crime branch was entrusted with the case after local people found the headless body in a sack burning near Millumpady in Arakkunnam eight years ago on a midnight.
The local police registered the case which was later handed over to the crime branch. Although crime branch team took over the investigation they were unable to identify the victim as the head was severed from the body when it was found burning. The probe team was found that the head was severed with an electric saw generally used for cutting wood.
According to the information now gathered by the probe team the body belonged to a person convicted for murdering his wife. The person identified as a native of Ernakulam district but settled in Kozhikode was convicted in the case of killing his wife. The probe team plans to seek the help of the brother of this person, currently settled in the US, to confirm the identity through DNA testing. Although the probe team contacted the person in the US he has not shown much interest in the matter, sources said.
