Collector gets award from President Pranab Mukherjee
The mandal level officials monitored the attendance in various centres
Ongole: District collector G.S.R. K.R. Vijaykumar received ‘Saakshar Bharat National Award-2014’ from President Pranab Mukherjee at a meeting held in Vignan Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday for turning 4.75 lakh non literates into literates within a span of nine months in the total literacy programme. Literacy rate in Prakasam district jumped to 78.84 per cent from 63.08 per cent. Women literacy had increased by 22 per cent in the district. This is a record in the country. Mr Vijaykumar had involved all the people’s representatives and about 20,000 officials and staff and Akshara Prakasam volunteers. He motivated the non literates to learn read and write in the centres.
The people’s representatives distributed books and slates to the non-literates and motivated them to learn read and writing. Mr Vijaykumar regularly monitored the programme. The mandal level officials monitored the attendance in various centres. They worked in a planned way. Mr Vijaykumar said “We have achieved this record with the combined effort of the officials, staff and volunteers and people’s representatives. It is a result of combined effort.” He attributed this credit to all the staff worked in the programme.
