Coimbatore: A 24-year-old youth committed suicide at an isolated place in Sengalipalayam, near Annur, here on Tuesday afternoon, the police said. Initial police investigation revealed that he had committed suicide due to frustration over losing Rs 7 lakh to a job consultant who promised a job in Australia.
He had committed suicide by pouring petrol on himself and set himself ablaze, said the police. The Annur police said Praveenkumar from Therampalayam village, near Karamadai, had completed B.E. (Aeronautical Engineering) and was doing M.E. part-time at a private college at Komarapalayam in Erode district.
The police said a week ago, he had joined a private firm in Periyanaickenpalayam. On Tuesday morning, he had sent an SMS to one of his friends, Damodaran, saying he was planning to commit suicide.
He also requested his friend to take care of his family. Damodaran immediately informed the Coimbatore district police. With the help of the cyber crime police, they traced the location of Praveenkumar's mobile. But by the time they arrived at Annur, they found only his charred body.
Police investigations reveal that a city-based job consultant promised him to get a job in Australia and took Rs 7 lakh from him last year. But he did not arrange for the job and failed to return the amount.
Praveenkumar became frustrated after losing the amount and took the extreme step, they said. The Annur police registered a case under section 174 CrPC (unnatural death) and further investigations are on.
