Youth susceptible to depression from unemployment and failure in love

CoimbatoreIn what can be considered as a disturbing trend, there have been 322 suicidal deaths reported in the last eight months. This shows that suicides are on the upswing, especially among youngsters and the most common reason cited is depression relating to unemployment and failure in love.
 
The other causes include family feuds, health ailments, inability to marry and academic failure. The means chosen by most victims are hanging, self-immolation and poison, says the report of the Coimbatore city police.
 
As per the national crime records bureau (NCRB), Tamil Nadu tops the national list in the maximum number of suicide cases in a year. Coimbatore takes the second place in the state, the first being Chennai.
 
A 24-year-old aeronautical engineering graduate decided to end his life after he was cheated by a consultant who promised him a job in Australia. The youth resorted to the extreme step of setting himself ablaze, frustrated at losing Rs7 lakh, just a day before the world observed World Suicide Day.
 
The dejected engineer had chosen an isolated place in Sengalipalayam, near Annur, to kill himself on Tuesday. He doused himself with petrol before striking the matchstick, dejected, depressed and cheated.
 
On Monday evening, a 16-year-old girl committed suicide at her house and police suspect a failed love affair. The police state that she hung herself. One lakh people commit suicide in India every year on an average.
 
The number of suicides in the past decade has recorded an increase of 21.6 per cent. Among this Tamil Nadu ranks first, according to reports of the NCRB. The highest incidents of 16,622 suicides were reported from Maharashtra in 2013, followed by 16,601 suicides in Tamil Nadu. Both account for 12.3 per cent each of the total number of suicides.
 
Coimbatore, a city known for its affluence and industrial enterprise, sadly ranks fifth in the number of suicides across the country during 2011. Comparatively it has escalated further during 2012 and 2013, police sources said.
 
According to the Coimbatore city police suicide statistics, 51 persons committed suicide up to January 2014, 690 suicide cases were reported in 2013 and 658 suicide victims were reported in 2012. Among the Coimbatore suicide cases, the age group falls between 16 and 60 years of age.
