Four picked up for probe into acid attack case
Youth was picked up late evening from the depot in the city and taken to Tirumangalam station
Madurai: The Madurai district police have picked up four persons for questioning in connection with the shocking incident wherein two college girls were attacked with acid near their college in suburban Tirumangalam on Friday.
Police sources said those who were said to have roamed in and around Perumal Koil street, the place of occurrence, in the afternoon hours on Friday were being questioned. Though over eight men were enquired, the police have narrowed down their probe to four persons.
A source said the needle of suspicion points to a youth undergoing training as a bus driver at TNSTC in Madurai, adding that he was dropped by three motorcycle-borne youths on the street around the time the incident took place.
The youth was picked up late evening from the depot in the city and taken to Tirumangalam station for enquiry along with two of his associates. “The investigation is still in the preliminary stage and the identity of the accused is yet to be ascertained,” an officer said.
The Tirumangalam town police have registered a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of IPC and section 4 of the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act against an unidentified person who attacked Meena and Angala Eswari with acid.
