Accident insurance to fund road safety
The funds collected from this would typically be used for community road safety, accident prevention etc
Hyderabad: Soon, a part of your accidental insurance premium could be used for promoting road safety, said Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari. “Around 13 countries in the world have adopted a system where one per cent of their accidental insurance premium goes towards promoting road safety. We aim to adopt a similar practise in our country,” Mr Gadkari told the media via video conferencing on Monday.
The funds collected from this would typically be used for community road safety, accident prevention, use of safety equipment, care of the injured bereaved and traumatised. Mr Gadkari, who also holds the portfolio of shipping, said, “The Yadgir-Warangal highway project in Telangana, which has been stalled for a long time will commence soon.” In July, the Central government had approved the four-laning of the Yadgiri-Warangal section of NH-163 (Old NH-202) in Telangana at Rs 1,487 crore on a PPP mode. However, the process of awarding the contract has not been started.
