Coimbatore: An independent candidate was arrested by the police for staging a protest at the collectorate on Monday. He complained that he was not given permission to carry out his campaign, the police said.

Chathrapathiy, 48, a yoga tutor from Kovaipudur, an independent candidate for the mayoral elections, even since he had filed his nomination papers, has been going around the city on skates to seek votes for the ensuing polls.

On Monday morning, Chathrapathiy, who had reached the Coimbatore collectorate, petitioned collector Archana Patnaik alleging that the police had refused permission for his campaign in the city. He then staged a sit-in protest at the collectorate.

The Race Course police, who rushed to the spot, arrested Chathrapathiy for staging a protest inside the collectorate campus. The police took him to the Race Course police station and are questioning him.
