Hyderabad: The Greater Hybderabad Municipal Corporation, on a beautification drive ahead of next month’s Metropolis Week, is replacing the strong slabs on the city’s pavements with RCC slabs.
It costs more than Rs 5 lakh to lay RCC slabs on each kilometre of pavement. The existing slabs are much stronger and do not break easily and RCC is no substitute to granite.
Mr G.V Rao, social activists and a resident of Alwal, explained, “99 per cent of the contractors knock off the granite stones. They use these slabs in gram panchayat parks but bill the GHMC for new material.”
Asked about the beautification drive, a senior official from the GHMC said, “around Rs 12.3 crore has been earmarked for beautification of the Metropolis Week. The repairs to the pavements is part of the beautification project. The GHMC engineering wing is keeping a tab on the beautification works and contractors.”
