A special chapter on child abuse has been proposed for school students
HyderabadA special chapter on child abuse has been proposed for school students by the Telangana state government committee on women safety. The committee came up with the idea following its interaction with school children and principals.

This along with many more suggestions will be submitted to the government. If the administration agrees, a child protection week will be held in November as part of a short-term plan.
During the proposed week, awareness programmes will be conducted across schools and kits will be given to students on how they can protect themselves from abuse.

The kit would include a hand book, an audio-video guide on tips to guard themselves against abuse and a manual for both parents and teachers. “While most teachers only counsel kids who undergo abuse, experts felt it was not enough. The idea of this toolkit is to counsel teachers and parents as well. Kids of different age groups need different ways of dealing with problems.

If approved, the kits will be given away in November and the chapter will be included in the curriculum from next term onwards,” sources said. A recent initiative taken up by CID called ‘Citizens Against Child Abuse’ is also working with a similar idea.

A group of people including citizens, police, civil society, volunteers from non-government organisations, counsellors from schools and other institutes are working in two groups. One group is working on preparing a manual, and the other group is firming up the awareness campaign. This model also has been put up for the state government for approval.
