In 2002, immediately after Modi became the CM, the communal Godhra riots broke out. He was accused of not taking any action and supporting the Hindu forces.
Modi took up the post of Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001, after Keshubhai Patel resigned. He served three consecutive terms as CM since then. He was elected as the Indian Prime Minister after BJP's thumping victory in the 2014 general elections.
Owing to internal politics and grumbles for acting as the ‘Super CM’, Modi was moved out of Gujarat to become the BJP national secretary in 1995 and eventually the general secretary.
His inning in active politics began at the age of 37 when he joined BJP. He played a major role in establishing the BJP in Gujarat and bringing the first victory in the state in 1995.
Modi started his political career as a RSS pracharak in 1970 and actively participated in the anti-Emergency movement in 1977.
At 17, he got married to Jashodaben but soon left for the Himalayas on a spiritual journey and never returned back to her. The controversy regarding his wife surfaced when he filled in her name in his nomination papers with the Election Commission.
His father Damordas Modi sold tea at a local railway station, helped by a young Narendra while his mother worked as a domestic help.
Narendra Damodardas Modi, born on September 17, 1950 at Vadnagar in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, was third out of the six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife Heeraben.
BJP’s landslide win during the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 was primarily attributed to a Modi wave created all over the country, following his successful run as a record third time Gujarat Chief Minister.
