Coimbatore: It was the last wish of the young girl suffering from advanced stages of blood cancer to fly high on an aircraft. Though she was unable to due to medical restrictions, Tamil Nadu Deputy Speaker, Pollachi Jayaraman, facilitated a tour for the girl around the airport and got her to sit on a stationed flight and get a view of the cockpit.
Rehana (16) was diagnosed with blood cancer nine months back after her parents, auto driver Zaheer Hussain and mother Mehamoda, visited several hospitals in the city and Chennai unable to diagnose the reason for her frequent fever and excessive menstrual bleeding.
Rehana had just joined a diploma course after she scored 420 marks in her class 10 exam, when she was diagnosed with blood cancer. P. Raguraman, a member of the Kovai Aram Foundation, told DC that he got a call from an oncologist of a city hospital on Monday saying that the girl who was undergoing treatment in the hospital wanted to see Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa who was visiting the city to campaign for mayoral candidate P. Rajkumar.
“As I got the call around 12 noon, I was unable to take her to the venue. But I took her to VOC grounds after the Chief Minister left the venue and got Rehanna to sit on the chair where the CM was seated,” he said.
It was there that they encountered Deputy Speaker Pollachi Jayaraman. Moved by the agony the girl was enduring, he had a small chat with her. She then expressed a wish to fly in an aircraft.
“Because she was medically unfit, Pollachi Jayaraman instantly called city police commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan and requested him to arrange an airport tour. Following this, the girl, accompanied by me and B6 inspector Gobi, took her around the airport and made her sit on a stationed flight.
She got to witness landing and take off and was very excited about it,” said Raguraman. “She is back at the hospital for treatment and has asked for a touch mobile with games,” he added.
