Mumbai: What Apple claims is the biggest iOS release ever, is finally out for updates. The new iOS 8 is compatible with iPhone and iPad models going back to 2011, which includes the iPhone 4s and above, the iPad 2 and above and the iPod Touch 5. However, since the older devices may not be compatible with all the new feature updates in the new operating system, the older ones will not get all the new features. Therefore the size of the update will also vary from device to device, ranging from 900MB to 1GB.

To install the new operating system, simply go to ‘Settings’, scroll down to the ‘General’ menu and you will notice a notification on the ‘Software Update’ bar. Tap on ‘Download and Install’ and your device will be updated with the new operating system. The time taken will purely depend on your internet speed and the amount of applications installed on your device.

However, there are a few things you must keep in mind before you go for the update. Firstly, ensure you have at least the minimum amount of storage space required for the software update (though, more the better). You can make more storage available by deleting items in usage settings.

Secondly, it is always better to run the download and installation on a Wi-Fi, since the size of the update might drain most of your internet data pack.

Lastly, it is advised to back up all your data before you go for a new operating system update. In case anything goes wrong, you will have all your data safe, and backing up also helps make space for the download.
