Construction of 21.4 metre height retaining wall is needed for both sides of the Krishna River

VIJAYAWADA: After warnings by various experts and environmentalists on river view capital proposal, the irrigation department is studying various aspects to protect the proposed capital city from floods and inundation threat.
The officials of irrigation department are proposing to construct the retaining wall for Krishna River, if the capital city is constructed riverfront. Following the directions of state government, the Krishna district irrigation department is preparing plans for taking various precautions for capital.
As per plans under consideration, the construction of 21.4 metre height retaining wall is needed for both sides of the Krishna River.
Already the officials are conducting survey from various locations at Krishna river flood banks. Recent study of the AP State Remote Sensing Application Center for AP Disaster Management plan, several mandals like Tulluru, Tadepalli, and Amaravathi in Guntur side and Kanchikacherla, Vijayawada Rural and Ibrahimpatnam are identified as flood prone areas.
Now the officials are analyzing flood records and physical position of the flood banks from both sides of Krishna River. Actually 21.4 meters height with 11.90 cusecs water flow was ever-highest record for Krishna flood records, which was in 1903. Later 11 lakhs cusecs water flow was second highest flood record for Krishna River in 2009. All the flood prone mandals were inundated.
In this backdrop, the officials of Krishna district irrigation department are designing plans to construct retaining wall for capital protection. Krishna district irrigation department superintending engineer K Srinivasa Rao said that already their department is on the job and submit the report to state government. Nearly 21.4 meters wall is needed and now we are identifying the locations from beginning to end for retaining wall construction, he added.
