Coimbatore: The DMK bigwigs in the city were conspicuosly missing on polling day. The DMK had announced a boycott of the mayoral bypolls and the prominent DMK men here kept off the polling booths."The mayoral election is a national waste," said former DMK minister Pongalur Palanisamy. The DMK leader who is always among the first to turn up at the polling booths just kept off the booths on Thursday.

"The Chief Minister removed mayor S.M. Velusamy in two-and-a-half years at her own whim and fancy. This election, is an eyewash and waste of public money. The public disinterest in these polls are evident from the very poor voter turnout. Not only did they distribute money in every nook and corner but they have also indulged in large-scale rigging. This election makes no sense," he alleged. The DMK's MP candidate for Coimbatore seat, Ganesh Kumar, did not turn up to vote. "Our party has announced a boycott. So, I did not vote," he said.
