Asian Games: India's medal chances
Deccan Chronicle lists India's promising athletes at Incheon
Saina Nehwal – PV Sindhu (Badminton): When it comes to Olympic sports, the promising Indian badminton contingent lead the charts. Saina, after winning the Australian Super Series, had to pull out of Commonwealth Games in Glasgow due to an injury. She would be hungry for a medal here. Her compatriot PV Sindhu is in top form after clinching bronze in World Badminton Championship.
Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestling): With no Sushil Kumar, the onus is on him to bring a medal. He made gold look easy in Glasgow. Wrestling in the 65kg category, can he end India’s 28-year wait for a wrestling gold? His zeal should have multiplied since he skipped the last Asiad in 2010.
India men’s hockey team (Hockey): A gold medal here is a ticket to Olympics. Captain Sardar Singh – who will be the the flag bearer for India – is confident of good show. With only two Asiad gold, the last being in 1998, they will be eager to turn the tide.
MC Mary Kom (Boxing): She had taken a sabbatical and her new start did not bear fruit as she could not qualify for Glasgow. But this time, the pugilist is packed with confidence, thanks to her recent biopic. The Olympic bronze medallist will have a point to prove at Incheon.
Kabaddi: When it comes to kabaddi, India rules the roost. They have established themselves as champions (six gold medals) for years. With Pro Kabaddi League being a huge hit, it has also built a fan base and television audience. Both the men and women’s team are strong contenders for gold.
Sania Mirza (Tennis): After success in US Open mixed doubles, she will have to guide the young Indian tennis squad to triumph. Along with Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna, she had decided to skip Asian Games but later changed her mind. Former junior World No.1 Yuki Bhambri makes the team stronger.
Star who would be missed: Jwala Gutta (Badminton), Sushil Kumar (Wrestling)
