Chennai: Around 31 heads of cattle, including 19 calves, were rescued when a truck transporting them was apprehended in Perumanallur, Tirupur district, on Saturday.
Arun Prasanna, founder of People for Cattle in India, said that the cattle were being transported from Andhiyur Shandy market to Kerala purportedly for slaughter. “We have so far stopped about 35 trucks carrying the cows, and based on a hunch, we stopped this particular truck, which was covered on all sides with a tarpaulin sheet,” he said.
While the driver of the truck is absconding, the helper was arrested after an FIR was registered with the police.
“This was in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act & TN Motor Vehicles Act that allows only six heads of cattle to be transported in a truck,” Prasanna said.
The cattle were found in a dehydrated and famished state. Upon a magistrate’s intervention, they were ordered to be sheltered in a ‘goshala’.
