Global event spreads clean beaches message

Nellore: Indian Coast Guard, as part of South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) covered under the UN environment programme, conducted International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) day at Krishnapatnam on Saturday. District collector N. Srikant flagged off the cleanup activity carried out along the Krishna-patnam beach jointly by the Indian Coast Guard Station, Krishnapatn-am, and Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd.
As many as 350 participants took part in the event. The participants removed the waste and non-bio-degradable mat-erials littered along the coast in a bid to motivate the local populace towards maintaining a clean environment.The clean up was initiated with the active participation of volunteer groups comprising of the serving staff members and family members of Indian Coast Guard, Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited, 24 (A) Bn, EME NCC and 10(A) Naval Unit NCC cadets of Nellore, Kri-shnapatnam Security Force personnel, Coastal Security Police personnel, Students from ZPPH School, RR School from Muthukur.
Chennai based TREE foundation also organis-ed ICC 2014 at Mypadu. “The main aim of the event that is being orga-nised by the Coast Gua-rd is to create awareness among the people and also to rope them in th-eir endeavour to remove debris from the beaches. It is hoped that this venture would spread awar-eness among the local citizens about clean coa-stal environment for the years to come,” Coast Guard Commandant G. Venu Madhav said.
