Chennai: The number of Indians planning to travel abroad this year has gone up by 21 per cent. While Dubai remains the No. 1 destination this year too, Chennaites seem to favour Singapore, with the US being their most preferred country, as per a recent survey.

According to TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, outbound travel trends during the first half of 2014 showed that Dubai was, by choice, the first foreign destination for Indians in 2014, followed by the USA and China.

When it came to accommodation, about 50 per cent Indians preferred rooms costing Rs 5,000 a night while 30 per cent opted for other accommodation options, such as B&B (bed and breakfast) and vacation rentals.

The findings, based on website traffic on TripAdvisor in the period January 1 to June 30, 2014, show that Indians prefer travelling closer home, with Asian cities dominating the ‘Top 20 Destinations’. USA takes the No. 1 spot in the ‘Top Countries’ category.

With interest in destinations like Belize, Brazil, Tokyo and Bhutan growing at a rapid pace, Indian travellers definitely seem to be coming of age as they prefer to branch out to farther destinations as outbound tourists from their traditional destinations in Asia in recent times, according to Nikhil Ganju, country manager at TripAdvisor India.
