Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada to upgrade sports infrastructure
Synthetic tracks, courts to come up; Rs 1 crore allotted for developing infrastructure
Rajahmundry: Two world class synthetic courts, two synthetic component cricket practicing nets and also 400 meters 10 lane athletic games track at a cost of nearly Rs 1 crore are being set up at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTUK) to promote sports internationally in a big way.
JNTUK authorities have taken up the development of the University sports grounds on international standards for multipurpose usage in a phased manner. The two synthetic courts will be used mainly for Basket Ball and Table Tennis. They can also be used for other sports also. It is for the first time that construction of synthetic courts has been taken up in any varsity in either Telangana or Andhra Pradesh.
The courts will have a viewer's gallery with a capacity of 100. It will also have mess facility and other attractions on the courts. The two cricket practicing nets with synthetic component at a cost of Rs 2.50 lakh will come up. Synthetic turf of international standards would be installed at the stadium at a cost of Rs 1.50 lakh. The Sports Council will also provide a bowling machine and an auto ball fielder at cost of Rs 4 lakh. The players can field 24 balls at once.
We have ambitious plans to build up teams within the university and encourage local talent. Athletics will also be encouraged on sporting talents of the students and will be rewarded suitably, said the vice chancellor of JNTUK G.Tulasi Ram Das. He said that apart from academic excellence, JNTUK also wants to make it mark in sports. He said that the sports stadium will be developed as world class stadia in future. Synthetic courts are being installed at a cost of Rs 68 lakhs, 400 meters 10 lane track at a cost of Rs 20 lakhs.
“Sports Council of JNTUK officials said that the synthetic courts will make it easier for players and they can play for longer period and with greater concentration,” said Sports Council secretary G. Syam Kumar who is making efforts to develop the sports grounds and prepare teams from the varsity who could bring laurels to the varsity. He said that the JNTUK Sports Council has secured a prominent place in Associ-ation of Indian Universities which is allowing the varsity to organize different inter-University games at Kakinada.
