Vijayawada: There has been an increase in the number of rape cases reported in the city. As many as 51 rape cases were reported till August, 2014 in the Vijayawada police commissionerate. 
 
The number of rapes reported was at 46 and 47 for 2013 and 2012, respectively. Most of these cases reported involved minor girls being cheated on the pretext of love and marriage. 
 
In 2013, 38 of the 46 cases related to minor and major girls, who were cheated by their “partners” on the pretext of love and marriage. Similar was the case in 2012, where 35 of the 47 cases reported related to cheating after a consensual relationship. 
 
“As many as 80 per cent of the rape cases booked were of young girls who approached the police after being cheated by their boyfriends. They are not technically rapes but are considered so by law. Young girls must take care of themselves and maintain presence of mind in all situations,” said a senior police officer.
