Mumbai: Dimple Kapadia had a taste of stardom at the age of 16 when Raj Kapoor spotted her. Her latest film, Homi Adajania’s Finding Fanny, saw her break out of her comfort zone yet again. In her words, “Raj Kapoor is my God and Homi is an angel”. Dressed in a black gown with her famous mane let down, she settled down for a chat with us about matters close to her heart — including the late Rajesh Khanna.
In all these years, why have you chosen to be inaccessible? Was that a conscious decision?
Not at all! I tell you, I had to do nothing in my life. God has been very kind to me. I have never struggled and I have never done anything. All this flowed very beautifully, things happened very fast in my life and my career, I got a film (Bobby), the film was a big hit, I got married, it’s been going on and it’s been wonderful. I have been a loner... even when I was working, you would hardly see me at any parties, unless once a year if I have to attend some big function. Otherwise, I am loner. And it has always been like that.
You became a teenage sensation after Raj Kapoor spotted you and cast you in Bobby. Could you relive that moment for readers of this generation?
I wish I could relive those days because I had no clue about the impact I had made on people. That was fortunate otherwise all this would have gone to my head. It’s a sad loss for me in a way, because I couldn’t really enjoy the whole moment because I was too young to comprehend it [pauses].
Go on...
The biggest high for me was to marry Rajesh Khanna. That was a high and I don’t think my success was as much of a high as getting married to this superstar. I used to be a big fan of his, it was dream come true. But I can’t really say the same about my career because I didn’t meet people, So I never felt the impact.
In a documentary about Rajesh Khanna, there are videos of your wedding on YouTube. There was total chaos outside!
Yeah, it was crazy outside the house! The wedding invitations were telegrams sent out because we got married within a week and cards couldn’t be printed. It was crazy. Lot of women died I think.
It’s said that fans committed suicide...
That’s what... many women committed suicide.
Earlier this year, some people “killed” you on social networking sites...
I was staying at Aashirwad (Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow) and cops called me in the night asking if I was okay! Can you imagine?
