Tirupati: As many as 15 students were injured among the 40 students travelling in a school bus when a speeding lorry bound for Renigunta from Chittoor hit the bus at Tanapalli Cross near Tiruchanoor on Wednesday.
The casualties would have been very high if not for another bus bound for Vellore from Tirupati. This bus also hit the school bus but the impact prevented it from turning turtle. The bus would have overturned thrice if not for the passenger bus, an eyewitness said.
The driver of the school bus belonging to Motherland Private School is being blamed for crossing the junction without noticing the approaching vehicles.
Some autorickshaw drivers rushed the injured students to Ruia Hospital in Tirupati.
Parents and management of the school heaved a sigh of relief as the students escaped with minor injuries. Tiruchanoor police have detained the school bus driver and investigating.
