Coimbatore: A day after his impressive win in the mayoral bypolls, AIADMK's Coimbatore urban district secretary P. Rajkumar took charge as the new mayor of Coimbatore corporation here on Wednesday.
He was sworn in as fifth mayor of Coimbatore after V. Gopalakrishnan, T. Malaravan, R. Venkatachalam and S.M. Velusamy who suddenly tendered his resignation after he was stripped of his district secretary post in the ruling AIADMK.
The DMK councillors boycotted the swearing-in ceremony. Rajkumar defeated his nearest rival R. Nandhakumar of the BJP by a margin of 2,91,343 votes.
Corporation commissioner S. Ganesh administered the oath of office to Rajkumar in the presence of rural development and municipal administration minister S.P. Velumani, collector Archana Patnaik and city police commissioner A.K. Viswanathan at the corporation office.
A large number of AIADMK workers flocked to witness the swearing-in ceremony. Rajkumar walked up the stage on a red carpet amidst councillors and office staff congratulating him.
Barring DMK councillors, DMDK, MDMK, CPI and Congress councillors took part in the ceremony. After his triumph in the mayoral polls, Rajkumar promised to take efforts to provide round-the-clock water supply and reduce traffic congestion by improving the condition of roads, building bridges and bus stands.
