KHAMMAM: The ambitious Telangana State Drinking Water Grid (TSDWG), aimed at supplying safe water to all the districts in the state, will be a Herculean task to the officials.
In Khammam district, water has to be supplied to 649 habitations and the officials of the Rural Water Supply (RWS), who prepared a preliminary report on TSDWG, came to a conclusion that funds and time required for the project would be more than expected.
Completing the project in 3-4 years is not easy and nearly Rs 4,000 crore would be needed to supply 100 litre water to each person in the district. About 8 tmcft of water, 11 water sub-grids, pipeline for 580 km, sub-pipelines for 4,400 km and 16 water purifier plants are required to give shape to the grid in the district.
Water will be drawn from Godavari flood-level anicut and safe water will be supplied to villages in 26 mandals. The purified water to the remaining villages will be supplied by drawing water from Kinnerasani, Palair, Wyra, Puttakota, Edulapuram and Nallacheruvu water reservoirs in the district.
An official, who is involved in the project, said allocation of funds in the budget and building water sub-grids and laying pipelies are the key elements in project. The Telangana government has plans to hand over the entire project to the RWS, including its execution.
An engineer, of the RWS, said the government’s move was a welcome one. “To make the project a success, the present hierarchy and system in the RWS department should be revamped,” he said.
“Undoubtedly, the RWS department will be given a free hand in executing the project but several other things are required like sufficient staff, engineers, modern technology and software which should also be provided to us,” he pointed out, soon adding that political intervention should be minimal. The government is planning to take up the project in a big way and efforts are on in this direction.
