Karimnagar: In a bid to create awareness over problems that people could face by joining with the Naxals, police officials are making nightstays in rural areas, particularly, the eastern part of Karimnagar district, which is considered as Naxal-affected zone. Cops have undertaken ‘Palle Nidra’ programme, in the wake of Maoist party’s week-long anniversary celebrations being held from September 21 to 26.

Kataram inspector T. Srinivas Rao said the programme was evoking good response. The programme is helping police understand problems of the public in the rural hinterland. By sleeping in those areas, police personnel are able to get first hand information of the living conditions in those areas, he said.

“During the night stay, police are also taking the help of cultural troupes, hired by the department, in trying to improve awareness on many social evils still in practice in these areas and the disadvantages of joining the Maoist party,” he said.

As part of Palle Nidra, police personnel are having food with the villagers and sleeping in the villages in the night. Palle Nidra has been organised in in Enkepalli, Annaram and Pegadapalli villages in Mahadevapur mandal, Damerakunta in Adivi Muttharam mandal and Ankushapauram in Kataram mandal, till now.

It is learnt that the programme would be held for four more days in other remote villages in the eastern parts of the district. It is aimed at weaning away youths and villagers from joining the Maoists and taking to violence.
