Kochi: Yasuyoshi Komizo, secretary general of ‘Mayors for Peace’, an international organisation working towards global peace visited the city and held discussions with Mayor Tony Chammany. During the visit Komizo handed over a letter to Chammany with regard to the selection of Kochi as the ‘Lead City’. Being the ‘Lead City’, Kochi will play a lead role in coordinating activities in the country for world peace and to mobilize support against nuclear weapons. The recent general conference of ‘Mayors for Peace’ had decided to nominate Kochi along with other foreign cities as ‘Lead Cities’.
‘Mayors for Peace’ has 6,276 member cities from 160 countries, including Mumbai and Kochi. During the meeting, Japanese delegates said the ‘Peace Boat’ would visit Kochi in April next year during its global voyage.
The sapling of a tree that survived the Hiroshima bombing – known as ‘Peace Tree’- will be planted in Kochi when the Peace Boat calls at Cochin Port.
Chammany said the civic administration would take a lead role in expanding programmes for global peace in the country. Representing the organisation, Chammany had attended the UN meeting on ‘Treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons’ held in Geneva last year. During the meeting, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, chairman of ‘Mayors for Peace’, urged Chammany to coordinate the operations of the organisation in India and proposed to select Kochi as the ‘Lead City’.
