Special cabinet meet on Maharashtra today
After NCP withdrew support, Prtihviraj Chavan resigned on Saturday
New Delhi: A special meeting of the Union Cabinet has been convened this evening to discuss the political situation in Maharashtra in the aftermath of the resignation of Chief Minister Prtihviraj Chavan.
"The Union Cabinet will meet at 7:30 PM today under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh," a senior official told PTI here.
Singh has been authorised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take emergency decisions during his ongoing US tour.
After NCP withdrew support, Chavan resigned on Saturday and his resignation was accepted by Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Saturday. As Assembly elections in Maharashtra are scheduled next month, the Governor in his report to the Centre may recommend imposition of President's rule in the state.
The Cabinet will discuss the Governor's suggestion for President's rule in Maharashtra, sources said. NCP decided to terminate the 15-year-old alliance with Congress as talks between the two parties for seat-sharing ahead of the October 15 Assembly polls failed.
