THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police  has been directed to video-record vehicle-checking  and even use mobile cameras in the event of non-availability of video cams during emergency situations.
DGP K. S. Balasubramanian had earlier directed the cops to record vehicle-checking, but due to various problems, including non-availability of video cams, the directive had not been strictly implemented across the state.
Now the DGP has directed district SPs to ensure that the direction is enforced without fail in their respective jurisdiction.
Police sources said since all DySPs, CIs and most SIs have video cameras under their disposal, it would be mandatory for them to
use them in normal situations. However, during emergencies the cops have been allowed to use mobile cameras.
“Many police personnel have mobile phones with high resolution cameras which can be put to effective use during emergency situations. But in routine checking they will have to use video cameras,’’ said a senior policeman.
The DGP’s direction is to ensure transparency during vehicle-checking. This comes in the wake of complaints of rude behaviour and violation of norms set for such inspections.
